Bringing you back together

A Closing Ceremony (‘Closing the Bones’)

Closing rituals are practiced across many traditions and cultures and vary combined with the unique offering of the practitioner. My closing ceremony offering is an ever evolving integration of practices that predominantly include:

  • Wisdom of the hips & postpartum healing rituals - the teachings of Dr Rocío Alarcón

  • Postnatal healing and mother warming taught by Wysewoman

  • Holistic Womb Massage

  • Energy & Reiki healing

  • Sacred Oils

  • Sound healing

I work with woman across a spectrum of transitionary periods - fertility, birth, trauma and loss

In my work I often use it as a physical and metaphorical closure after the immense physical, emotional and spiritual opening and expansion of pregnancy and birth. You could consider it as a Closing of Birth - allowing the new mother to experience deep rest and yielding after her birth experience so that she can move forward.  Literally sealing the huge emotional and physical expansion she has gone through in her pregnancy journey to motherhood

This not only helps to reintegrate a woman's sense of containment and centering after the profound and beautiful opening during pregnancy and birth but is also a sacred celebration acknowledging the journey they have been on to become a mother and helping them to return to a sense of wholeness

Closing rituals are available to mothers immediately postpartum (following a cesarean birth, time to heal scar tissue is recommended but it is down to the individual woman as some of the rituals can serve to assist the healing process). It is however, not limited to new mothers. It is a powerful tool, open and recommended to all women. A threshold ceremony is particularly potent for women's transitionary stages: from the beginning of periods, for fertility issues, following birth trauma or loss, perhaps a decision to finish having babies and as woman enter into a new phase of life such as menopause. It is a special form of self care offered from one woman to another. Please get in touch if you have a particular issue that you feel compelled to work with in this way

“This was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life.  It was the respite my body, mind, heart and soul needed after giving birth, and also after giving so much every second of every day since the birth of our son.  Laura’s closing ceremony is empathic, sympathetic and full of loving kindness which is precisely what a new mother (or mother again) requires, even if they do not realise this at the time.  The ceremony made me stop, focus on me and my healing for a couple of hours, and also aided me in remembering myself each day afterwards. Laura’s gorgeous spirit, and spiritual insight was precisely what I required, and has left a wonderful ripple effect post the ceremony. Every mother regardless of the age of their child/children would benefit from receiving the gifts this process, and Laura gives so openly and without judgement.” Mrs C. The Ceremony

As with any bodywork I find that it is best to allow the ritual to unfold. I utilise a range of tools from my trainings to bring my own unique offering to this work. The elements come together to form a unique ceremony every time it is performed but what you can expect are below:

I create a deeply nurturing and safely cocooned space - giving you permission to work through any emotions, reconcile feelings around your experience and release anything residual held in your body

The closing space is energetically cleansed. There is also the option to choose an essential oil or blend to use that resonates with you. The space is bathed in warmth, candle-light and if preferred gentle music

Initially we share some tea and spend some time together so that if you feel inclined you can share your personal story and anything else that is coming up for you at this time. When you feel ready we will take a moment to set an intention for the closing and a few moments grounding in meditation. There is the option to include a ritual bath here to begin our immersion

To begin a specifically tailored womb massage will stimulate the blood flow, cleansing any blocks and flows of energy in the body. It also helps to tone muscle and tissue and may help in aiding a woman's healing process post birth. For the massage I use a warm oil blended with essential oils each carefully selected for their healing qualities postpartum. The massage can incorporate the torso, neck, back, shoulders, head, feet and abdomen however, it is totally guided by you. The massage is carried out either on my very thick comfortable floor mat (recommended for deep surrender and grounding) or on your bed if this is your preference (leaving you to be able to snooze in bed whilst I quietly assemble and leave)

The closing is done using a combination of techniques both by hand and by gently rocking the hips encased within a ‘hipping’ cloth, more of which are then used to gently rock and wrap key areas of the body. This can help with alignment issues and encouraging the abdominal organs to settle and return to their original position. I also incorporate Reiki and energy healing

It is not unusual for you to experience a release of emotion and the space will be held for you to feel comfortable to do so. This is an important part of the process in shifting old energy so that you can make space for a renewed sense of yourself having moved forward

Once the wrapping is completed you are left to surrender into deep relaxation in your cocoon. I often integrate sound bath healing at this point using a drum, koshi chimes and crystal sound bowls. You simply immerse yourself into the resonances. At the end of the treatment you will be gently helped to unwrap. This soothing experience will leave you feeling deeply restored and rested. There is the option for a ritual bath at this point too

It can be very helpful to spend some time reflecting and journalling on your experience as a way to further allow you to move forward

Traditionally, these deeply nurturing postpartum rituals are carried out several times over within the first few days and weeks postnatally. You may feel that you would like it more than once - there is no limit - just that you are guided by your own body and process. Some time between treatments to integrate the process is recommended

A closing ceremony is usually offered as a 1:1 session in your home or alternatively you may invite your own sisterhood, perhaps those who supported you the most or you had present for your mothers blessing or baby shower, for which I can facilitate a small group ceremony

I tithe a percentage of my earnings back to the community project of Dr Rocío Alarcón - co-founder of the Iamoe Center in Ecuador.  Rocío has passed on her knowledge and indigenous wisdom in the hope of preserving this sacred ritual. I learnt directly from her and have been granted permission to carry out this work with my clients

An Ethnopharmacologist, Ethno-botanist, shamanic practitioner and extraordinary teacher and healer, Rocίo has spent over 30 years working with ethnic groups in the tropical rain forest and Andes Mountains of Ecuador and in the Basque Country, Spain. She has contributed to various Amazonian and Andes indigenous communities and has collaborated with international organizations including the Wildlife Conservation Society, Care and The Nature Conservancy establishing economic opportunities for local people with products from the forest. Rocίo is renowned and beloved. She practices and teaches about shamanic healing ceremonies, knowledge coming from her mother and grandmother's lineage, from the Andes Mountains in Ecuador
